Anima [Aeon]
Seymour's ultimate aeon, with a fayth statue enshrined in Baaj Temple. The woman depicted on the collar plate is believed to be Seymour's mother, who became a fayth. Incidentally, "Anima" is a psychological term referring to the feminine aspect within a man. Its counterpart is "Animus," the masculine aspect within a woman. During development, the other-dimensional Anima that appears when using the Overdrive move “Oblivion” was called by this name.
Aquaeductus Purifico [Location] (浄罪の水路; Jōzai no Mizuji)
An aquatic prison-like waterway in the Bevelle Temple. There is a treasure chest shop under the water that even prisoners can use. The room with the entrance to the waterway also has a cell that once held Jecht.
Auron [Person/Male]
A person who served as a guardian to Braska alongside Jecht. After defeating 'Sin,' he challenged Yunalesca but was defeated and became an unsent (the scar on his right eye is from this encounter). Afterwards, with the power of 'Sin,' he traveled to Dream Zanarkand and watched over Tidus' growth. In his youth, he was quite hot-blooded, and even though he appears calm and composed now, his fundamental nature hasn't changed. Notably, the sake in the jug on his waist is not for drinking but for disinfecting and revival purposes. In the game, it is also used in his Overdrive techniques "Banishing Blade" and "Tornado."
Besaid Fabric [Local Specialty]
This is a special product of Besaid Island, and is also exported to the mainland. It is made by a veteran craftsman simply called “Old Man” and his apprentices. It is a traditional craft, good quality, and apparently sells for a fairly high price. However, the apprentices are dissatisfied, saying that they cannot make money by just following traditions.
Blitz Stadium [Building]
A facility used for Blitzball matches. In the game, there are two stadiums featured: one in Dream Zanarkand and one in Luca. Both stadiums share a similar structure, with a spherical pool surrounded by tiered seating. The Luca Stadium is the largest building in Spira and was also used as the venue for Yuna's speech at the end of the game.
Boat House [Building]
The houseboat where Jecht, his wife, and Tidus lived. Tidus's fans were envious, calling it "cool," but the high waves made it difficult to walk on rough days. However, this environment may have helped develop Tidus's strong legs and balance.
The Calm [Location]
The period of peace that arrives after a summoner defeats Sin, lasting approximately from six months to several years. The term "Nagi" (Calm) is thought to derive from the Japanese word for a calm sea without waves. In Spira, it is known as the "period without Sin," but more accurately, it is the time during which a new Sin is gathering strength.
Celestial Weapons [Weapon]
Legendary weapons hidden in Spira. Each of the seven main characters has their own exclusive weapon. Among them, Wakka's Celestial Weapon, "World Champion," is a prestigious item once owned by High Summoner Ohalland. When a Celestial Weapon is upgraded to the second stage, the corresponding aeon gains the ability to break the damage limit. There is often some commonality between the weapon's owner and the corresponding aeon.
Daigoro [Aeon]
A guardian beast resembling a komainu (guardian lion-dog) that accompanies Yojimbo. When negotiating with Yojimbo, Daigoro appears. However, if negotiations fail, Daigoro will not appear in future negotiations. The name Daigoro is inspired by a famous period drama.
Dona [Person/Female]
A sharp-tongued female Summoner. She travels across Spira with her lover and guardian, Barthello. Although she often makes remarks that can be taken as sharp or sarcastic towards Yuna, these comments are meant to encourage her as a mentor. However, in a show of spite, she once forced Tidus, who was not a guardian, onto an elevator leading to the Cloister of Trials as a form of revenge. Her revealing attire may be an attempt to emulate Yunalesca?
Farplane [Location]
A world where the sent deceased are said to reside. Illusions of the dead appear in response to the calls of the living. The appearances of Yuna's mother and Chappu, Wakka’s brother, can only be seen in this place. Incidentally, the faces of the visiting worshippers change according to the story's progress.
Fayth [Concept]
Those who provide the "dream" necessary for summoning. They exist as souls separated from their bodies, sealed in the Fayth statues. When the dreams they see are combined with pyreflies by the summoner's power, aeons like Valefor materialize. The appearance of aeons is said to be shaped by the Fayth's imagination. This makes one wonder what kind of dreams the Fayth for the Magus Sisters' eldest sister, Mindy, had.
Gandof [Person/Male]
The first High Summoner in Spira's history. He is also known for sealing the Qactuars in the Thunder Plains. In his era, there were no lightning towers in the Thunder Plains, so the task of sealing the Qactuars must have been quite challenging. He was likely also gifted with the ability to avoid lightning strikes.
Gatta [Person/Male]
A hot-blooded rookie Crusader with ideals of defeating 'Sin.' His positive and optimistic nature is evident, and the song he sang in the Kilika Woods, "Come, young ones, join the Crusaders, defeat 'Sin', and make that cute girl look your way~" was likely written and composed by him. In Operation Mi'ihen, his fate depends on Tidus' actions. If he survives, he shows significant emotional growth after overcoming the death of his respected senior, Luzzu.
Ginnem [Person/Female]
The first summoner that Lulu served as a guardian. She lost her life in the stolen Cavern of the Stolen Fayth and became an unsent without will. Given that she summons Yojimbo to attack, it is believed that she was killed by fiends on her way back from negotiating with the Fayth in the depths of the cave.
Grand Maester [Title]
The head priest of Yevon Temple. Responsible for overseeing the temples in each region. The temple system basically operates on a council of four maesters, but Grand Maester Mika has held his position for 50 years, making him the de facto supreme leader of Spira with significant influence.
Guadosalam [Location]
A city where the Guado tribe lives. Due to its many multi-layered intersections, it is easy to get lost. Until you understand the layout, you will have to run around with Navara Guado. The shop here exploits visitors to the Farplane, charging 1.5 times the usual price for goods. Some customers mistakenly believe that the high prices indicate high quality, leading to the reputation that "Guado potions work well," which likely originated from this misconception.
High Court of Yevon [Concept]
A "sacred" court that judges serious offenders against Yevon Temple. The trials are overseen by Kelk Ronso, one of the four maesters who handles legal affairs. Yuna and her party are judged here for harming Maester Seymour and learn shocking truths about Yevon. The court's ability to unilaterally judge and execute Yuna, who is outside their organization, reveals the temple's dark side.
High Summoner [Title]
A summoner who has defeated Sin (excluding Yunalesca). There have only been four: Gandof, Ohalland, Yocun, and Braska. Their statues are enshrined in temples across Spira, and the construction and transport of these statues take many years. It took ten years for Braska's statue to arrive at Besaid Temple.
Home of the Al Bhed [Location]
The homeland of the Al Bhed on Bikanel Island. It was built quietly in the harsh desert to avoid persecution by Yevon Temple. The structure, utilizing machina, is fully air-conditioned. However, it is destroyed by the Guado's attack mid-story and is ultimately blown up by the Al Bhed themselves.
Ixion [Aeon]
An aeon with a distinctive long horn, enshrined in the Fayth statue in the Djose Temple. The person who became the fayth loved running, and in the Fayth's Chamber, they perform squats and speak to Tidus and others about running until the end of their dream.
Kimahri Ronso [Person/Male]
A young Ronso known for his broken horn. He is Yuna's primary guardian. When he left his home on Mount Gagazet, he was entrusted with Yuna's care by the dying Auron, and he has protected her for the past ten years. Due to past humiliations, he is so reticent that even Wakka, who has known him for a long time, says, "I don't know what he's thinking." However, as the story progresses, he speaks more frequently, and after acquiring the airship, he suggests the idea of "talking to Maester Mika." Although his expression rarely changes, he secretly practices smiling.
Macalania [Location]
A region that extends north of the Thunder Plains. It is characterized by a mysterious forest bathed in a bluish-white glow and a lake frozen by the icy breath of Shiva’s fayth. The water that springs from the spring deep in the forest is so rich in pyreflies that it is used as a raw material for spheres. Consequently, the area around the spring is prone to the spawning of fiends and is a dangerous place. The Macalania Temple, located in the center of the lake, is a temple deeply associated with the Guado tribe, where Seymour serves as the High Priest. The building is supported by the frozen lake's surface, leaving it suspended in mid-air. What would happen if Shiva's fayth were to vanish and the ice melted...?
Mi’ihen [Person/Male]
A hero who founded the organization that would become the Crusaders, known as the Crimson Blades. His name is still remembered, and statues of him can be found on Mi’ihen Highroad and Mushroom Rock Road. There are also legends that Mi'ihen’s sword, which he once used, is still somewhere in Spira. Given that Mi'ihen’s statue was sealed nearby and the locations where the enhancement marks and sacred marks were found, it is speculated that Auron’s Celestial Weapon, "Masamune," might be the weapon once used by Mi'ihen.
Musicians [Race]
A sub-race whose bodies are integrated with their instruments. There are three types: trumpet, drum, and harp, each with a common personality and speech pattern. The drum type resembles the Hypello in appearance and personality.
O'aka the XXIII [Person/Male]
A traveling merchant journeying across Spira. Driven by the regret of not being able to help his younger sister, who was a summoner, he helps Yuna and her party. While he never forgets a favor, he seems to conveniently forget debts, as he never repays the money he borrows from Tidus and the others.
Ohalland [Person/Male]
A person who defeated 'Sin' about 230 years ago. Originally a blitzball player from Kilika Island, he brought the second Calm to Spira and revived the waning popularity of blitzball. Today, he is an idolized figure among blitzball players.
Pelupelu [Race]
A small, diminutive demi-human species, about half the height of a human. Their population is low, and only a few appear in Luca in the game. At first glance, they look quite strange, but their beak-like structure is just a decoration, and underneath it you can see their mouths, which are very similar to a human's. Although the setting states that they have "high-pitched, fast-talking voices," there are no scenes with Pelupelu dialogue with audio in the game, so this cannot be confirmed.
Plush Toy [Weapon]
Lulu uses these plush toys as weapons, a hobby of hers. They move freely thanks to a secret power known only to her. Apart from the Cactuar plush toy, the other plush toys are from past "Final Fantasy" series.
Pyreflies [Concept]
A kind of invisible bio-energy in Spira. They exist everywhere, including in the air and within human bodies. When their concentration increases, they emit light and float in the air like insects, hence their name. Pyreflies easily harmonize with water, and water rich in pyreflies is used as a raw material for various spheres.
Pyreform [Concept]
A body composed entirely of pyreflies or an entity possessing such a body. It is sustained by a strong "will" that serves as its core. Pyreforms include fiends, aeons, and the dead, as well as Dream Zanarkand and its inhabitants summoned by Yu Yevon. The term "phantom body" itself does not appear in the game. **Adopting Pmog’s translation for the Japanese “genkoutai.”**
Sending [Ritual]
A ritual to send the souls of the dead to the Farplane. Without this, the dead often turn into fiends, making it a crucial ceremony in Spira. Any summoner can perform it, and it is witnessed multiple times throughout the story (at places like Kilika Port and Home of the Al Bhed). The different movements of the ritual seen in the game are due to focusing on different parts of the dance each time and are not improvised.
Shiva [Aeon]
An ice-clad aeon whose Fayth statue is enshrined in Macalania Temple. The Fayth itself emits intense cold, preventing the ice of Lake Macalania from melting even in summer. Alongside Ifrit, Shiva has appeared continuously since "Final Fantasy III."
Souvenir/Gift ① [Weapon]
A longsword sold at the Travel Agency in Macalania. Jecht bought it when he stopped by the agency with Braska, indicating he hadn't given up hope of returning to his original world.
Spheres [Concept]
Objects made of water rich in pyreflies. They are used for character growth, ability development, recording and replaying visual and audio data, and triggering mechanisms in the Cloister of Trials. Their uses are varied.
Sphere Pool [Facility]
The field where blitzball is played. It is a spherical body of water filled with pyreflies, literally making it a "ball stadium." The pyreflies within the pool support the activities of blitzball players and maintain the pool's shape, which means recording and replaying video is not possible within it.
Sphere Wave Searcher [Device]
A device installed on the airship. Cid used it, despite not understanding its principles, to search for Yuna, much to Lulu's exasperation. Nonetheless, it proved useful in locating Yuna.
Ten Years and Ninety-Five Days Ago [Setting]
The day Yuna first met Jecht, which is also the day Braska began his pilgrimage to obtain the Final Aeon. On this day, Jecht told young Yuna stories of Dream Zanarkand and even performed the Jecht Shot for her, something he “usually wouldn't show for free.”
Thunder Plains [Location]
A plain where rain and lightning constantly fall. It is the only route connecting Guadosalam and Macalania, with lightning towers installed throughout. The official name "Gandof Thunder Plains" comes from the legend of the High Summoner Gandof sealing Qactuars here. Jyscal’s Sphere was recorded here to avoid his son Seymour’s eyes.
Via Purifico [Location]
A passage within Bevelle Temple inhabited by fiends. Being thrown in here is essentially a death sentence, but Yuna and her companions were the first to escape it. This location also appears in a sphere recording a conversation between Auron and Kinoc just before Auron joined Braska's pilgrimage.
Wantz's Sister [Person/Female]
As her name suggests, she is Wantz's older sister and the younger sister of O'aka XXIII. She set out on a pilgrimage as a summoner when she was still young and never returned. According to O'aka XXIII and Wantz, she was "exactly like" Yuna, but if you go to the Farplane at a specific time, you can see for yourself just how similar they are.
Warrior Monk [Role]
Members of Yevon Temple who perform tasks requiring military force. Officially, they defend the Bevelle Temple and guard important figures. But behind the scenes, they are responsible for suppressing those the Temple considers rebels, such as the Al Bhed. Auron was also a warrior monk before becoming Braska's guardian.
Wen Kinoc [Person/Male]
One of the four maesters of Yevon, originally from the warrior monks, and a close friend of Auron. After 'Sin' was defeated, jealousy of Auron's legendary guardian status led him to use underhanded tactics for advancement, becoming a maester three years ago. He viewed Seymour as a rival and constantly tried to check his power, which led to his death at Seymour's hands on the Great Bridge. Although it seems he died a frustrated death, he surprisingly didn't become an unsent, perhaps because he had no lingering attachments to the world.
Yevon Temple 1 [Organization]
An organization spreading the teachings of Yevon across Spira. It has considerable influence in various areas, supporting the operation of ferries and aiding the Crusaders. Officially, it is said not to hold secular power, but since almost everyone lives according to Yevon's teachings, it essentially controls Spira.
Yevon Temple 2 [Building]
Buildings of the Yevon Temple scattered throughout Spira. Excluding the abandoned ones, five currently exist. Each temple has its unique characteristics and architecture, such as the Kilika Temple, famous for praying for blitzball victories, the Djose Temple known for its lightning mushroom rock, and the Macalania Temple hanging above the frozen lake surface. The Fayth statues are enshrined in the inner chambers, and summoners obtain aeons by communing with the Fayth in these chambers. Incidentally, only summoners can enter the Fayth's Chamber, and only summoners and their guardians can enter the Cloister of Trials leading to it.
Zanarkand Abes [Blitzball Team]
The team from Dream Zanarkand's East A District, where both Jecht and Tidus served as ace players. After Jecht went missing, his trademark was adopted as the team's emblem in honor of his accomplishments.
Zanarkand Duggles [Blitzball Team]
The team from Dream Zanarkand's South C District. They faced the Zanarkand Abes in the finals of the Jecht Memorial Cup Tournament. True to their reputation as a "rough team of dangerous players," they employ dirty tactics, such as bullying their opponents.
