Seymour
An installment in the "The Real Story of Spira" chapter of Ultimania Omega. This contains a timeline of Seymour's life before and during the events of the game, as well as a brief character analysis.
Born into Tragedy
Seymour is the embodiment of Spira's tragedy.
Being of mixed blood between a human and a Guado, he faced persecution from a young age solely due to his origins. From the moment he was born, his very existence was deemed a sin.
His father, who should have protected him, prioritized his position as the leader of the tribe, resulting in abandoning Seymour and his mother. The mother and child were sent to the desolate ruins of Baaj Temple. It's not hard to imagine the despair and resentment of Seymour, who was forced to live a miserable life, isolated from others at such a young age. However, his true tragedy began after that.
When Seymour was 10 years old, his mother sacrificed her life before his eyes to become the fayth for his Final Summoning. This was a sign of a mother's love, knowing she had little time left and wanting to give her soul to support her son. But for Seymour, it meant losing the only thing that supported him. This sense of loss and unparalleled despair led him to his plan to bring "death to all of Spira" as he explains in the story.
To Sever the Spiral with Death
Despite being at the core of Yevon Temple, which considers the survival of Spira its ultimate goal, Seymour wishes for the destruction of Spira.
For Seymour, who was abandoned by the world at a young age and lost hope when his beloved mother gave her life, Yevon's teachings could not save Seymour. The essence of "maintaining Spira through hope" was meaningless to him. Simply put, his desire to destroy Spira can be seen as a desire for revenge, a desire to make everyone feel his own sorrow.
However, his actions and words, such as "destroying Spira to save it," can also interpreted in the following way. When his mother became the fayth for the Final Summoning, he lost his hope and simultaneously realized that Spira’s hope was futile. That is why he acted to sever the spiral of such tragedy and free people from their sorrow. In this sense, he was similar to Tidus and his friends in trying to save Spira by breaking the spiral. Of course, the method he tried to use was twisted.
Obsession with Yuna
For his plan to "become Sin," Seymour needed a summoner who would choose him as the fayth for the Final Summoning. So he set his sights on Yuna and proposed to her to build the essential "bond" for the Final Summoning. But did he truly see Yuna as merely a tool for his plan? His words at the time of his last breath and his reckless attitude as an Unsent reveal his distorted love for Yuna.
Both being of mixed human and non-human race and losing their mothers at a young age, Seymour and Yuna's circumstances are similar. However, unlike Seymour, Yuna did not despair at the sight of those around her and was ready to sacrifice her life for them. As he got to know Yuna, he was gradually drawn to her, his complete opposite, or perhaps it is because she was his exact opposite. After becoming an Unsent, his feelings for her ran wild, and he wanted to possess her even if it meant killing her. In the end, he was sent to the Farplane by the very person he was so attached to, and he may have been content with that.
Cursed Aeon Anima
"Anima" is a word with various meanings. For example, if taken as a psychological term meaning "the ideal woman in a man’s mind," it reflects Seymour's longing for his mother, the fayth. Additionally, from his statement that Anima is his own darkness, it can be interpreted in the Latin sense of "soul." The aeon reflects the heart (soul) of the summoner who manifests it. This results in its cursed form or appearance.
